Are bioidentical hormones the best way to decrease your hormonal symptoms?\u00a0 Are there side-effects to these substances?\u00a0 Many women have gone on bioidentical hormones and have had very good results, while others have not.<\/p>\n

Several patients have commented their hot flashes very quickly resolved when going on bioidentical hormones.\u00a0 Keep in mind that you are not taking a vitamin or mineral that creates a hormone, you are taking a hormone.<\/p>\n

Respect and caution should be a factor when choosing to go on a hormone vs a precursor of a hormone.<\/p>\n

The Sign of the Times<\/h3>\n

Bioidentical hormones are being used to manage and balance hormonal issues.\u00a0 Previous hormone replacement treatments have been questions as causing cancer.\u00a0 Not all women react the same with these substances and many women do well on bioidentical hormones for many years after taking them.<\/p>\n

The Honeymoon Phase<\/h3>\n

When first starting on the bioidenticals, many women feel much better and are relieved that their symptoms are going away.\u00a0 At about 3 months the liver may not be able to break down the hormones.\u00a0 This will cause the first step of dysregulation of the hormonal system.\u00a0 The hormones will be stored first in the fat cells.<\/p>\n

Dysregulating the Hormonal System<\/h3>\n

1st Dysregulation:<\/strong> The fat cells are saturated and the body can no longer compensate for the increase of hormones.\u00a0 The cells will start to pull receptor sites off the cell membrane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With less receptors sites on the cells, it is harder for the hormone to get into the cell.\u00a0 This same thing happens with insulin.\u00a0 Now the woman may begin to have symptoms of too much and too little of the hormone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

2nd Dysregulation:<\/strong> The next thing which may happen is that the HPA axis will be altered. The HPA (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis) controls the hormone system.\u00a0 This will be imbalanced and can cause anxiety and depression or both as well as hormonal symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

3rd Dysregulation:<\/strong>\u00a0Once the HPA axis is imbalanced by the bioidenticals, the messaging to the adrenals and thyroid will be altered.\u00a0 This chain of events turns into a complex situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some women start to experience mood and anxiety symptoms due to the imbalances caused by the bioidenticals.\u00a0 Their doctor may put them on SSRI\u2019s\/depression or anxiety medications, which only compounds the problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If the bioidentical hormones are creating imbalances in the system, these issues can be addressed, and in many cases resolved.<\/p>\n
